It then hangs. What does the "Remote control not allowed; using loopback address" mean, I assume it is a network connection error of some type. I do use a router/NAT gateway, but no proxy. I can ping the data server from within my terminal. Get the same result with seti also.
This user interface setup is very, very, very, clumsy and very, very, very, frustrating to use. It would really help if there were good AND complete instructions posted - rather than having to go on a holy quest to get a little bit here and a little bit there.

Looks like you are not attached to a project yet. I am not sure what the command is for attaching in *nix. You should be able to find it in the wiki.

You are not attached to the project. There are no computers in your computer list on this web site.
The local loopback message means that the GUI can only be run from the local host.
If you are running windows, please use the GUI (BOINCMgr.exe) click on the projects tab, click on the attach button, enter your data there.

I looked at the WIKI - I see nothing concerning a Linux command line start-up - it appears to be all GUI instructions. I have said this twice already below, now three times, I DID run the -attach_project (url + key) command!!!
It starts the client, did the cpu benchmark, does the other opening boilerplate stuff, and then attempts to connect and hangs - NO other error messages and NO network activity (uploading).
I have a similar problem with folding@home due to an incompatible gcc/glibc library in Red Hat 9 - 2.4.20.31-9. Does anyone know if RH 9 has the same problem here? The stock RH 9 works with folding, but the updated 20.31-9 has an updated gcc that for some reason, no one knows why, does not work.
Is there anyone out there using Linux 2.4.20.31-9 for this project?

While I don't have a RH system, I can run it on various versions of Mandrake, Gentoo and Ubuntu with assorted versions of gcc with no problems.
But I don't understand how you're running the -attach_project flag without putting the command to start the client in first (using the order you gave in one of your prior posts). The run_client command is only a shortcut to cd to the proper directory then launch the boinc program. If you want to use a flag to attach, you have to run "./boinc -attach_project" on the command line, then it will ask you separately for the url and the account key. However, 4.43 includes a graphical interface to make all that much easier. If you first execute ./run_client at the command line, then execute the file named "boincmgr" (either on the command line in a separate terminal with "./boincmgr" or by clicking it with the mouse) it will launch the graphical interface, and from there you can choose the "projects" tab and see what you really are and aren't attached to. If you're not attached, just click the "attach to new project" button at the left and enter the url and account key there.
