I believe that the launch has been delayed to January 6th. This is due to a problem encountered during a static firing of the Falcon 9 engine on 12/16.

Why do doctors have to practice?
You'd think they'd have got it right by now

SpaceX is scheduled to launch

SpaceX is scheduled to launch on Tues. Jan 6 at 0620. Here is a short "description" from an NBC news story:

  • Three minutes after launch, the second stage is due to separate and fire up its own rocket engine to continue the trip. Then the first stage is slated to relight its rocket engines and go through a complex series of maneuvers to put itself safely down on a 300-foot-long, 170-foot-wide (91-by-52-meter) "autonomous spaceport drone ship" in the Atlantic Ocean.

Should be quite interesting.

[edit] SpaceX is to provide a live feed here

To me it looks like the four towers in the background ie. some of those encircling the pad, were mounted with lightning rods ?

Cheers, Mike.

Quite right. We have some fairly serious lightning in this area especially during the summer. Hopefully the towers will attract the lightning rather then the rocket. When the shuttle flew it was encased in a cage with a large white lightning rod on the top. You would not want lightning to be the ignition sequencer. It would not be pretty.
