Yes, I felt the quake. It woke me up at 3:20 AM - PDT. I HATE late night quakes... It takes me over an hour to get back to sleep. Daytime, no problem; but late night makes me queasy.

Crunchy Neck is indeed the precise term, often found in the company of Itchy Spleen, Stink Eye, Droopy Mesentery and The Catastrophe Lobe.

[ I am told that there are 'J-Knees' out there, but I myself have never seen a case. This disturbs me. ]

Now this morning on the way to work, I feel I could definitely have used an M1-A2 ! Apart from the fuel issue, I believe it's other specs would make up for that in our local traffic.

Speaking of local traffic : actually the use of in-car GoPros is increasing I'm told. Is it true that in some countries they can come fitted to a new car, and that one may get a discount insurance policy if so ? That way if you get punted, the other party can't BS their way out of a hi-res video record. There was a near fatal head-on recently recorded by a GoPro in an un-involved vehicle. The police took a statement from driverX ( alleged perp ) then showed him the video and then asked if he would like to review his version. Awkward*. I also like the way that all the UFOs have become real camera shy now that nearly every mobile phone is one.

* That is : the version you might try to outguess/contradict could be anyone at all. Get that wrong and you have 'making a false statement to Police' plonked on the charge sheet in addition to the original issue.

Ahhh. Gotta love a nice comfy

Ahhh. Gotta love a nice comfy attic after a hot muggy day. Finally got tired of waiting for a cooler day and crawled up to finish fishing the wire for my extra computer circuits. We now have MO POWA.

Those 2 additional circuits will be more than adequate until I go back to work and start buying more cruncher parts. I put in a 2 gang box so I have room for 2 more circuits in the future.

My Raspberry Pi is almost done with it's second wu. I set the factory overclock to Turbo Boost (1 Ghz, 6 volt) and it looks to shave about 16 hours off the run time. We'll see where it ends up.

Edit: Funny story from my Marine Corps days. Changing an engine in a tank. The old ones not the Abrams. Engine arrives on the back of a 5 ton truck and we wanted to run it for testing before we installed it. So we hook everything up and stick the fuel line in a 5 gal can of fuel. Hit the starter and she fires up, running like crap, smoking, the whole nine yards. Long story short, someone messed up and put 30 weight oil in a diesel fuel can. That tank engine was running, actually running, on 30 weight oil. Those were some mean engines.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Ha ! That's impressive. Or should I say compressive. Must have had amazing injectors. What next, bitumen ? If you want brutal & reliable then Diesel Does It. Only two* things stop a diesel : (a) lack of fuel and (b) lack of fuel.

( edit ) While the others are self explanatory I should explain The Catastrophe Lobe. Almost exclusively found in Young Adolescent Males ( YAMS ) leading to the Good Idea At The Time Syndrome, the She Said She Was Seventeen Paradox, the I Was Only Driving Slowly Theorem, the It Wasn't There When I First Looked Proposition and the It Had Always Worked Before Conundrum. Typical areas affected are ski slopes, beaches, uptown, downtown, mid-town and in the general vicinity of all internal combustion engines. The base cause is hypothecated to be due to exposure of the Y-chromosome to oxygen.

Actually one other thing will too...cold weather if the fuel is not 'winterized', many times here my old VW diesel used to refuse to start because the fuel would not flow thru a frozen fuel filter!! Adding one gallon of gasoline per 10 gallons of diesel fuel 'fixed' the problem though, as did the 'winterized' diesel fuel when they started bringing it to my area.

As an aside in Mexico Ford sells a car that has a switch on it to change the fuel types AS YOU DRIVE. You can choose from gasoline, diesel or even propane/natural gas, each having it's own tank of course. They say they won't import it into the USA because it is 'too expensive' to make it work with the EPA emissions regulations. Apparently any 3 of the fuel types could be out of stock where you are, but only very rarely all 3 types, so you can fill-up with what you can get and still keep going.

Just heard a story at the train museum about "the engine that was too stupid to die." It had bad batteries. Really bad. Once it was jump started, it was fine, until they went to shut it down. Press the shutdown button and it opens a relay, which somehow (I didn't catch the technical details) causes the fuel to stop flowing to the injectors. The engine starts winding down, slower and s-l-o-w-e-r... until the auxiliary generator is going too slow to keep the relay open, fuel starts flowing again, and the engine revs back up to idle! I think they said they had to get a stick and manually open something, either the relay or some other component (another detail I didn't catch).

( edit ) @Mikey : yeah I heard much the same! Largely it's all in the carburation so with 'intelligent' sensing one can approach the correct stoichiometric mix. Recalling my flying days the fuel for the Lycomings could vary a bit in a pinch, but one would have to pay real close attention to the engine temperature as normally some fuel passes through unburnt thus providing a cooling effect. That matters very much under high load and low airflow eg. with a steep climb you go rich. The carby vaporiser sits integrated into the sump housing and thus cools the engine oil separately from the displaced oil cooler & radiator. Wish I could go back to flying, but bushfires came along ( five years now, but it is still like yesterday ) and kids to put through university ....

- the airspace above you.
- the runway behind you.
- the fuel sitting in that tank down there on the ground.
