aside: i discovered that with just 4 work units running the system runs at 145*f which is well with in my comfort zone. so i may just disable GPU, and limit it to 4 threads, dont suppose boinc sets affinity?
No Boinc does not set affinity as of right now, but you can do it yourself, it just unsets itself after the current unit finishes and then you need to go back in and set it again manually for the next units. Right click on the bottom task in Windows, start Task Manager and go thru the list until you see a unit that is running, right click on it and then left click on 'affinity'.
If you go here http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd you can download Hiren's Boot CD that includes a bunch of testing software for the different part of your pc. It is not always intuitive, but just remember to press the "M" key, no quotes, to get back to the Menu if you get dropped into a command prompt. I have used it for years, some programs work on some drives and some don't, but I have never had drive testing program do any damage when I ran the wrong program on the wrong drive. Also the IBM stuff is the generic if your drive isn't one with the software built in.
In your case WD also makes software to test your drive, it used to be included with the drives but you can probably find it online, I think it is included on Hiren's cd though.
BE CAREFUL to NOT RUN something like DBAN though, it can wipe your drives clean, no recovery possible without spending TONS of money!!
I had a whole lot of errors with a number of Asus P6T's when I first got them a few years ago with Einstein crashing on them, but they could run memory tests for hours (Hirens or Memtest86). It was eventually tracked down to the BIOS memory settings. The memory was XMP and all it needed was to be set to that in the BIOS and it behaved afterwards.

sadly since both systems (the old 530s and the new xps 8700) are dells, the bios are locked, however when talking to the higher ups they asked me about over clocking settings with specific instructions to get to said settings, so i KNOW the xps 8700 is capeable of much more advanced settings, i think they just remove (or more likely comment out) the code to allow it before pushing updates to the public,
ive tried (and failed) in the passed to find a backdoor or a more "advanced" copy of the bios that would allow such access.. frankly i think once they EOL a product they should release such a copy. all in all, ill build my systems by hand from now on out.
i think i just have bad luck, if it was i7-4770 specific, im sure there would be more reports of systems getting hot enough to boil water (as mine was)
im going to try an odd ball experiment later when i have the energy with prime95 running a specific core at a time, just to satisfy my curiosity :)
