Yup, Trekkies can salute this naming event. Turns out there is an actual ancient mythic connection too.

Speaking of names, I've been reading about the LHC recently and was wondering why there appears to be a need to roll in acronyms so clumsily. For example : A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS. I mean if you want to say it's big - because it is - then just call it Thumper or Whopper and be done with it. My preference is for the likes of Compact Muon Solenoid as it is technically descriptive without going for cute & clever. Anyhows I guess if you pay for it - I didn't - then you call it what you like. :-)

Cheers, Mike.

Vulcan Is In

Speaking of detector names, I think the LHC guys were at least a bit more creative than their colleagues at Fermilab:

CDF : Collider Detector at Fermilab
and

D Zero ( DØ ) .

Hmm....

Yes I see HB. :-) Actually

Yes I see HB. :-)

Actually there is a host of other experiments going on at LHC which aren't Higgsy per se. Not headline worthy so to speak. Alot of fascinating stuff that isn't lunging for the bleeding edge of discovery. Within the Standard Model paddock there is still plenty of nuances to define and tweak. They have a very impressive information infrastructure, which ought not be too surprising really!

Tim Berners-Lee came to Melbourne a few weeks ago but I missed the opportunity to go to his lecture and the meet and greet. Though I spoke with someone who did : he's a lovely fellow.

Cheers, Mike.

Bummer... 'Vulcan' was

Bummer...

'Vulcan' was vetoed as a name by the IAU, so the winners are 'Kerberos' and 'Styx'

Well, they went for

Well, they went for continuing the underworld theme. Presumably Unix security & communications mavens would be happy though. :-)

Cheers, Mike.
