I thought einstein@home users might find this article interesting. It details the setup and operation of the Titan super computer which is rated at 20+ petaflops!

The whole setup is quite well explained, and I found some of the attached youtube video's very interesting. Apparently getting time on this super computer is quite the competitive process.

It's pretty amazing that through the miracle of the internet and much mutual scientific curiosity/volunteered resources we're able to surpass 800 teraflops for our own project!

Titan super computer used to model supernova's

Wow. Mind blowing. Or at least it will be til the next upgrade comes along. :-)
I like this comment especially :

Quote:
.... The process isn't all that different from what you'd see in a desktop: remove screws, remove old card, install new card, replace screws ....

... rinse, repeat. Also :

Quote:
.... NVIDIA has been focusing on non-gaming compute applications for its GPUs for years now ....

Quote:
.... NVIDIA believes that Fermi will open its Tesla business up to a group of clients that would previously not so much as speak to NVIDIA. ECC is the killer feature there ....

Quote:
.... The problem with running workloads on a supercomputer is the output can be terabytes of data - which tends to be difficult to analyze in a spreadsheet ....

Cheers, Mike.

This is really amazing,

This is really amazing, though I didn't read how much power it consumes? (maybe I missed it while reading)

Click on the subsequent pages:

Total power consumption for Titan should be around 9 megawatts under full load and around 7 megawatts during typical use. The building that Titan is housed in has over 25 megawatts of power delivered to it.

With flywheel UPSes to carry

With flywheel UPSes to carry them until the diesel generators kick in; shame there don't appear to be any pix of them!

Interesting article on the power side of things here.

I'm thinking that 9 megawatts is for the computer and the other 16 megawatts is to run the air conditioner...
