If my computer crashes and I lose several tasks in mid-stride, does that affect or limit my ability to get future projects?
Also, if I perform an upgrade and abort tasks to return them before doing an upgrade, does that affect or limit my ability to get future tasks?

Are there penalties for lost/aborted tasks?

for your first question, i dont know. for your second one, yes, an abort is equal to an error, thus for each one you abort your ability to download more work is halved. instead of abording them just "suspend" them (i assume by upgrade you mean boinc) or set the project to "no new tasks" and wait for the ones you have to finish.

RE: If my computer crashes

Each CPU core has a quota of 40 tasks per day. This quota is reduced by one for each successive failed task - computer crash, compute error, abort, whatever. A quota reduced in this fashion will double for each subsequently completed good task. In other words it takes a lot of errors to reduce the quota which can then be very quickly restored once the host starts producing good results.
It depends on what sort of upgrade you are talking about (hardware or software) and how you go about it. A BOINC software upgrade requires no special precautions - just stop BOINC and install the new version 'over the top'. An OS upgrade (a newer version) or a substantial hardware upgrade can also be done without needing to lose the tasks in your cache or the ID of the machine. It is entirely possible to preserve your BOINC data on an external medium and restore it after you have completed whatever upgrade you are contemplating. If you tell us what you want to do we could give more specific advice.

Hello, thanks for the replies. The upgrade was an OS upgrade and it didn't go as planned so I lost the tasks in progress. That was the reason for my concern.
Everything is up and running smoothly now.
