    Has anyone had used the first x-box as a linux computer, I was wondering about the viability of its cpu power.

      I think it was a discussion about this over at the SETI numbercrunching boards a couple of months ago.

        As I understood it, Microsoft, in the name of customer service (or something) actually designed in features on the CPU and chip set to prevent the X-Box from running Linux. Not sure how successful they will be in thwarting the truely dedicated. But, I did find that leaning perverse ...

          I did some investigation and found that yes the x-box can have linux installed on it but it seems that the best way to go about doing this is to replace the bios chip with an after market one. I think it has a p3 800mhz and 64megs of ram. Not a speed demon but its quiet and power efficient and i have 2 of them hanging out doing nothing, I ll see if i cant give it a try.

            there are two products. The XBox which can run Linux with a few modifications. and there is XBox 360 which currently cannot.

            The Xbox has some Pentium chip inside and the Xbox 360 has a customized triple-core PowerPC chip.

              Though I suppose if you have an X-Box of either version then it is tempting to wonder ... :)

                Just the 360 and only for installing Linux on it ... somewhen ... when it works.

                  The original XBox has a 733Mhz P3-Celeron (128k L2) with the FSB bumped up to 133MHz. Not exactly a powerhouse these days ;)
