I am using a compaq presario f700 with an AMD Turlon 64 processor and 2 gig ram.

Windows Vista Blocks Boinic

Vista doesn't allow many programs to start up automatically. The UAC in combination with Windows Defender will stop programs from loading automatically.

Ways around it:
- Start BOINC Manager manually after you logged into Windows.
- Install BOINC as a service and don't let BOINC Manager start up from the Startup folder.

Or just wait for BOINC 6, which will have a fix for that. It'll be a while though before 6.2 will be released.

Another very important tip: install to C:\\BOINC or somewhere outside of the "program files" tree. (Also fixed in version 6 but it could be a long time before a working version 6 client is released.)

I don't know how to install as a service, if you mean the 3rd option on the install menu it wouldn't let me.
I did install to C:\\boinic , still does the same

The Service install needs a Windows administrator account with password.

You can check errors you got in Event Viewer (normally in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer), system log or application log.

Just out of curiosity, what does this tip affect? I'm currently running BOINC from C:\\Program Files\\BOINC as a service (in Vista). Does installing it to a folder such as C:\\BOINC make it able to run at boot automatically without it being installed as a service? Or is it supposed to fix some other problems that I'm not seeing?

When installed under program files Vista will often not allow the client to change any of the files. So all the tasks either error out or loose all progress every time BOINC exits.

That's interesting. I wonder why that only happens in some cases. And more specifically not in mine.

Probably runs okay in an administrator account but not in an unprivileged account.
