Jord, yes please get well!!

Jord, yes please get well!! You are a valuable resource for E@H

The results of a CACLS on the state file:

C:\\PROGRA~1\\BOINC1\\client_state.xml NT AUTHORITY\\SYSTEM:F
BUILTIN\\Administrators:F
B40F032BE01449A\\Jon Maguire:F
NT AUTHORITY\\SYSTEM:F

which indicates that my username has "full" authority for the state file (and indeed all the files in the BONIC1 folder).

I will tinker with JM7's suggestion of file useage tools via sysinternals.

Thank you all,

Not necessarily. That depends on whether or not XP tells you all.

Here's what a CACLS does for my state file. (Windows 2000, I am full administrator.)

E:\\Live BOINC\\client_state.xml Computername\\jorden:F
Computername\\jorden:(special access:)
READ_CONTROL
FILE_READ_DATA
FILE_WRITE_DATA
FILE_APPEND_DATA
FILE_READ_EA
FILE_WRITE_EA
FILE_EXECUTE
FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES
FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES

NT AUTHORITY\\SYSTEM:F
BUILTIN\\Administrators:F
NT AUTHORITY\\SYSTEM:F

See the difference? Mine tells me what permissions I have. Yours is silent about that. (I did edit my computername ;))

Jord, that is very

Jord, that is very interesting. I checked the options for CACLS, and don't see a "verbose" option. I have run Filemon from Sysinternals. There are some interesting entries, including a number of "NAME COLLISION". I haven't posted the offending entries, as there is quite a few lines. Perhaps I could email the results?

As always, thank you for helping,

Thank you for the two output

Thank you for the two output files, Jon.

As I asked in the last email, did BOINC at any time during the advanced output capture give the error that it couldn't write the state file?
If it did, was this at 4:28:05 PM?

There are some other strange things going on here that someone else has to look at. (Not necessarily me) I mean all those DLLs it can't find. But okay.

There's not one failure that I can find in the output file.
At least my own one miswrites client_state_next.xml once every 0.02 seconds. ;)

Jord,
Thank you for looking at the filemon output. Yes, I got a popup message and this is in stddaeout.txt:

We're getting

We're getting somewhere...

1715 4:28:10 PM boinc.exe:5008 IRP_MJ_SET_INFORMATION C:\\Program Files\\BOINC1\\client_state_next.xml NAME COLLISION FileRenameInformation

There it is... now I have to find someone who can tell me what this file does. ;)

Well, Jord, this morning

Well, Jord, this morning after I booted the laptop, I had completely forgotten about BOINC. The last couple of days it had given the usual error. Well, I had completed a couple of tasks, when I happened to look in the tray, and saw BOINC. I opened up the manager and IT WAS DOWNLOADING WORK!!! It's now computing!! I feel the hand of AE at work here :-) Really, I have no idea why it started working. Thank you for all your help, and to the others that helped. This is really weird. But what the heck, I'm working so I'm happy!!

Good to read that. I'll still

Good to read that. I'll still go after the 'unknown' file, but have to wait for a developer to come back from vacation for that. So had to wait until after the 15th anyway. ;)
