I reinstalled BOINC 5.2.2, no trouble with the download, everything is in place and I still cannot attach the project... I just got off the phone with my internet provider and the tech could not find any problem that would prevent me from utilizing BOINC. My firewall is set to allow boinc.exe. I've exhausted all possibilities at my end. Any further suggestions would be most helpful...Thanks-Donna

In an earlier message, you reported the contents of your messages tab including this snippet:-

Quote:
10/23/05 7:08:36 AM||get_local_network_info(): gethostbyname failed

Is this message still there when you fired up 5.2.2 and tried to attach?

I don't really know exactly what that bit means but it sounds like your machine is confused about its own identity. I think it means that it couldn't work out the connection between hostname and ip address. Someone who really understands Win98 networking may be able to help, particularly if this message is still there.

The fact that Boinc can't have access to all the 3 hostnames means Boinc can't connect to Internet.

If you open ZoneAlarm, go to "Program Control" (left part). By clicking on 'Programs' (right part) you should see a list of programs. Inside this list, you should find 'Boinc Client'. At the right of it, under the name "Access" (which is at the upper part), you should find 2 green V's. If this is not the case, left click on the level of the row of 'Boinc Client' and use the "Allow" for both "Trusted" and "Internet". Boinc should now be allowed to access the Internet and the trusted zone.

Close Boinc Manager, start over again and see in the message tab what messages you have.

Good luck.

One more test...
In a DOS-console type: "tracert www.google.com" to check how far it takes you.
I'm not sure if this helps anything... but I'm curious. :)

Long time since I used any dialup connection.(Does a modem have an IP-address?)

Hello Donna

Sorry I took so long coming back to the forum - been busy formatting the PC.

if you go to start/run and type in "ping www.iol.co.za -t" without the speechmarks, what do you get ? I'm assuming that you are using the same machine for BOINC as for the forum ?

Hi

Every device that connects has an IP address - but a modem changes everytime you dial-up, or rather the ISP allocates a different IP address each time

Hello

I've a buddy makes a living fixing malfunctioning PC - I asked him to come over if he is interested - maybe he will be of help. Certainly his knowledge of win98 networking is streets ahead of mine own - "nations" ahead in fact.

Hi that message did it say something like bytes to ..... and then bytes received..., or did it say something like cannot access...

Did Zonealarm pop-up asking if ping could access the internet ? BTW Ctrl and C kill the dos window

One other query - are you connected directly to the internet - no network at home etc ?

Gray

OK sorry it's after midnight here - I gotta work tomorrow - will check back then

Donna,

This snippet identifies your problem, I believe. I'm pretty sure you need more than 64MB of physical RAM in order to run BOINC. Is there any way you can add another stick of RAM and try again? If you let us know the specification of your machine, I'm sure we will be able to recommend a cost effective memory upgrade that will get you going quickly.

Edit:

Also I just noticed your benchmarks:-

Quote:
10/24/05 9:09:22 AM||Benchmark results:
10/24/05 9:09:22 AM|| Number of CPUs: 1
10/24/05 9:09:22 AM|| 71 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
10/24/05 9:09:22 AM|| 179 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
10/24/05 9:09:22 AM||Finished CPU benchmarks

Those are very low values and would indicate that your computer may not have sufficient power to tackle a cpu intensive project like EAH. For example I know of a computer where the respective numbers are 310 and 484 where an EAH result takes 100 hours to complete. Your numbers are way too low to meet the deadline.

Cheers,
Gary.

Now this makes sense and it's what I was afraid of... I think it's time for a new computer...

Anyway, thanks to all for your persistence and assistance.
