Humble Pie is nothing like those you like. See the ancient recipe from Castle Howard in Yorkshire.

Humble Pie

Quote:
Humbles are deer entrails and when venison was the sole preserve of the English aristocracy ,the poor peasants were given the entrails ,the guts or whatever you call the nasty bits !!

I won't have a humble pie,

I won't have a humble pie, I'll instead have a not so humble apple pie with lots of whipped cream. Preferably one baked by my wife, those are the best!

WK is correct. After hunting

WK is correct. After hunting the meat was given to the Gentry, and the entrails or offal was left for the peasants as a thank you for assisting in the hunt. It was the same in Scotland with stag hunting and Haggis.

Also a tenuous link there to Boxing Day when traditionally the servants were give a box of goodies to thank them for their years work. Usually containing gifts, bonuses, and sometimes leftover food from the employers Christmas festivities the day before. I can remember in the early 50's my mum leaving an envelope out for the dustmen at Xmas with a couple of half crowns in it.

In popular parlance of course to eat humble pie means to accept that you have made a silly mistake and are therefore thought of as a lower class of person. You can of course see the link between that and food.

Personally I have never eaten, and won't eat offal i.e. liver, kidneys, hearts, brains etc. These days I am 75% vegetarian. But of course in choosing that diet you need the vitamin and mineral supplements to go with it. And they ain't cheap these days!

Apple pie is then still a good one, even for a veggie! The whipped cream too!

I'm not a 100% veggie yet but

I'm not a 100% veggie yet but heading that way. Home made apple pie is fine, bit not with that squirt cream in the can stuff. But our cat likes it :-))

She has dinky feet doesn't

She has dinky feet doesn't she? I don't think I've ever seen them properly from this angle before...

I've not quite worked out why I used to make really good pastry in hotter climates than I do in the UK. It should really be the other way round. I've put it down to being at sea-level instead of at altitude. So I mostly stick to making fruit crumbles nowadays.

edit: oh... there appears to be an arrow I never saw before either. Odd.

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Who is she? And what arrow?

Who is she? And what arrow? That post results in more questions then it answers. I guess that qualifies it as a mysterious post.

The arrow referred to is a mouse cursor exactly between the hippo's feet.  I'm guessing that 'she' is the hippo...but I could be wrong.  I think I've been wrong before, but I could be mistaken.

It is a past time at which she appears to excel, Sir. A trademark if you will. ;-)

My wife has treated us to homemade Marrakech Kisses for dessert this evening, her mother's recipe passed down through the generations. They will be following her father's favourite main meal and a recipe passed down from his side of her heritage - Manti.

I have formed the opinion, news her parents are planning a visit, will be shortly forthcoming. ;-)
