Tom WOW!  Sounds like you

Tom

WOW!  Sounds like you are competing with AWS.  I've just invested a few million in your local power company :-).  Which is to say that I'm impressed by your hardware/software setup!

Keep up the good work and I'll be reading your posts more carefully in the future.

My BOINC setup has been running fairly smoothly for more than a week.  I'm attempting to bring in some LHC@Home work - fiddling with VirtualBox.

Cheers, Doug

Doug,

If anyone is competing with AWS it is most likely our moderator Gary.  He probably has the largest # of individual machines in his "Farm" (aka Data Center) and except for some Institutional participants who are running multiples of AMD's EPYC servers with 128c/256t, he may have the largest installation that is crunching E@H tasks out there.

If we are talking about individual performance I have calculated what it might take to compete with the #1 machine and its way over my capital and operational budget. :)

So I am discontented with puttering along with my R5700's split between two machines.  If my cash flow continues to be at its current level it is certainly possible I will have to take the 3 R5700 offline to help save on electrical bills except for "contests".

So my "other" goal is to get the 3950x box with 2 Rx 5700's installed set up so it is more competitive with this box which is in the top 20 or so.  The reason I am looking to try to get nearer his RAC is he is also running two Rx 5700's under Windows 10 like my system.

The main differences are

  • probably brand/model of Rx 5700 GPUs
  • Any tuning/tinkering he has done to make the GPUs crunch faster and
  • I am running a different MB/Cpu combination that is crunching a lot of non-E@H CPU tasks.

Assuming the MB/Cpu combo and a load of CPU tasks is not making a difference the only question is how can I get it up there?

That box is mine.  In fact I'm typing on it right now.  You should be easily able to beat it with a 2 RX 5700 machine, because I am running a very heavy power limitation which considerably reduces the GRP production below the maximum capability.

Right now I am running using MSIAfterburner as my control interface, and the setting for "Power Limit %" is -50 for each of the two cards.   However I was running -45, -45 for the month before changing it on December 31, and the RAC currently displayed is probably about right for this box at that level.

As to brand and make of card, one of the two cards in here is an XFX model on which I have the BIOS switch set to the "mining" setting.  It gives markedly better performance in every respect than does the particular MSI brand card in the other slot.  So model does seem to matter among the RX 5700 cards.

I run zero other BOINC work on this machine besides running two 5700 cards at 3X multiplicity on Einstein GRP.
