NASA has successfully put a new probe Juno in orbit around Jupiter.
A sequence of tones transmitted from the spacecraft confirmed the braking manoeuvre had gone as planned. Receipt of the radio messages prompted wild cheering at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Can I be the first please to quip that "they are on the spot to observe!"
Excellent. A neat neat summary of the design choices for that aspect. I recall a recent flight to the ISS via the Soyuz system : one of the astronauts blandly stated that ( paraphrase ) 'you just sit on top of a bomb and hope that it behaves like a rocket'. I think that is why I admire astronauts greatly : they suffer no illusions, or at least not gladly. My kinda people.
The narrator mentioned external ice build up as the cause of landing failure for Jason 3 ( I hadn't known that attribution ), which has been noted as a locking failure on one of the legs. So the implication is that said ice interfered with the leg fold-down mechanism. Interesting.
Also it was said that the length of the barrel is at/near maximum for strength reasons, the diameter at max for handling reasons.
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

IIRC there was a comment by Mr. Glenn that he was sitting on top of a rocket all made by the low bidder.
