Running two at the same time?

Topic 188442

I currently have both SETI and E@H running in BOINC. My problem is that only one project at a time will crunch. I have them both set to use 50% of the CPU (100 and 100 for each giving 50 for both).

Is there something else I need to do? When SETI is running, the two E@H units I have are both paused and vice versa. Thanks in advance for any information!

Running two at the same time?

Unfortunately that's how Boinc schedules work. It divides up the time into pieces and runs one at a time. More detail can be found here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/cpu_sched.php

Your HT CPU will only be able

Your HT CPU will only be able to crunch 2 WU's at the same time, either 2 WU's for S@H, either 2 WU's for E@H or either 1 WU for S@H and 1 WU for E@H.

When one or the other application is running depends from the timings of crunching of a WU.

You don't have any problem and can leave Boinc as it is doing.

Hrmmm, in that case, how can

Hrmmm, in that case, how can I set it up so that each program will use 100%? Right now they only use 50% even though the other program is not running.

Do you mean by this you have only 1 WU that is processed in stead of 2?

Right now I have two E@H WUs.

Right now I have two E@H WUs. They are both running as they should, but in system processes the E@H application will never use more than 50% CPU.

I'm sure it has to do with how I have it setup. I have both SETI and E@H set to 100. In BOINC, under resource share, each project has 100(50%) listed. I'd like it if each individual project(not individual WUs) would use as much as possible which is what I thought would happen when I chose 100 for each.

I guess you have 2 E@H applications running, is it?

In this case, everything is normal: 1 WU is using 1 application and roughly 50% of the CPU power, the other WU is using also 1 application and uses also roughly 50% of CPU power.

The 100% is only a value of resource share and this has nothing to do with the CPU usage. If your setting is 100% for S@H and 100% for E@H it only means that for 24h. of processing, 12h. will be used for E@H and 12h. for S@H.

If your setting would be 100 for S@H and 300 for E@H, then S@H would have 6h. of crunching time a day and E@H 18h. of crunching time a day.

You're welcome.

Happy crunching.

I am not certain, but you do you have a dual CPU or hyperthreaded machine? If so, it will crunch 2 WUs at the same time unless you disallow this from your settings on the web page.

BOINC looks at the resource debt for each project when a WU for that project is started. The project with the highest debt is the one that gets run. The debt is based on the resource shares and the CPU usage history.

The resource shares are not specified as a % because the different projects do not talk to each other and different computers on the same account can have a different mix of projects that they are attached to. Rather they are converted into a % on the client. Resource % = 100* Project Share / Sum of all project shares on that computer.
