Hi all,

I have not looked too much into this, but have stumbled across comments about OpenSolaris & Solaris not being supported.

Firstly, is this true? Secondly, where are we on this? Is it an E@H or BOINC issue?

I have an OpenSolaris / Solaris box with a nice GPU that could quite happily contribute to E@H and other projects.

Finally, I would be very grateful if anyone has any links or detailed instructions on getting BOINC up and running on either. I have a horrible feeling it is not supported natively. :(

As mentioned, any help is much appreciated and I am willing to get involed as best I can.

All the best,

Gerald

OpenSolaris & Solaris Native

Yes, it's true. But people are porting over BOINC to other platforms. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/DownloadOther for what's supported these days.

On the project side, it depends on whether or not the source code of the project is open source, before the 3rd party people can try to make a port of it. Not all projects have their source code available as open source and even if they do, it isn't always possible to port over the code and get it working on all platforms.

It may be easier to use a Linux VM and run through that.

(Since you're cross-posting this on the BOINC Dev forums, I thought I'd repost my answer from there to here. :-))

There is a SETI app for OpenSolaris by Dotsch. I installed it using VirtualBox on my Linux box to run OpenSolaris 10.0. But it was very slow, probably would run better on a native Solaris box.The BOINC client for Solaris, also by Dotsch, recognized my Opteron 1210, which is SSE3 capable, only as a PentiumPro+MMX.

Yes, I feared as much - possible waste of resources for me, but might have a play about with it.

I am quite surprised about this. There are probably SUN HPC clusters around the world with spare CPU cycles that would contribute. I also wonder where SGi would fare too with other projects relating to their equipment and certain projects. I suppose I could go on and on.

I guess it is probably time over effort and take-up per operating system/version (whether it is worth their while to port it?).

Thanks for the link regarding projects - I had already looked at it :) I will have a scout around or, eventually, ask someone involved.

If you come across anything in the future please do keep me informed.

Cheers.

Thank you very much for this - I might have missed this, but will indeed have a look.

Thanks once again.

It looks like there was/is some attempt to build BOINC in OpenSolaris.

Boinc in Package Factory

Perhaps if more people vote for BOINC, they'll put more effort into building it.

I am using BOINC 6.2.19 by Dotsch on OpenSolaris 10 and it works. But the only project I could find was SETI@home. also by Dotsch. I am running Solaris as a guest OS on my SuSE Linux 11.1 using VirtualBox 3.1. The only problem I have is that my Opteron 1210, which is SSE3 capable, is seen only as a Pentium_Pro+mmx. Dotsch said that this depends on the virtualisation software and not on his BOINC client. Anyway it is slow. It would be interesting to test it on a native Solaris box, without virtualisation.

Every time SuSE sends me a kernel upgrade I can no longer run Solaris because the kernel module for VirtualBox no longer works with the new kernel. I must recompile it using the kernel source code, but SuSE has not sent it to me.

I have reinstalled VirtualBox

I have reinstalled VirtualBox 3.1.6 on my SuSE Linux 11.1, this time with no problems, and on top of it an OpenSolaris SunOS 5.11 of June 2009. Then I installed a BOINC client 6.2.19 and a SETI app 6.03 also by Dotsch and it started running, after a few errors due to a forgotten LD_LIBRAY_PATH. But SETI was the only app available. The strange thing is that my Opteron 1210 is seen only as a Pentium_Pro-mmx. I am giving it only 1 GB RAM and 16 GB disk.

I would sure like to let my Solaris 11 box crunch for boinc but it appears the programs are out of date...
