I don't want to be pedantic, but the Rules & Policies page says:

"... Einstein@Home may send you periodic newsletters; however, you can opt out at any time."

The account creation page indeed has the boxes alredy ticked.
Hence the user has to take positive action in order not to recieve e-mail.

The European Union Directive on electronic communication, law since December 2003, specifically says only opt-in is allowed. This is to prevent abuse by form submission with all sorts of tick-boxes already set in disagreeable states.

As Einstein@home is a civilised and community project, I suggest that the pages be changed to conform with this view that "the user should not have to do something in order not to receive unwanted material".

Best regards,

I haven't received any message since joining in January 2005. So maybe it's not so important. I am still receiving messages from classmates.com after one year of nor replying to their messages!

Best regards,

I didn't know. I've written to the BOINC developers mailing list about this, to have it changed as default in all projects. Could you perhaps provide a URL or reference for this law?
