I have been preoccupied

I have been preoccupied elsewhere (for about 10 days) and just tried reconnecting to einstein.phys.uwm.edu after disabling my Norton Internet Security firewall. Sure enough I was able to connect to einstein.phys.uwm.edu and get enough data that the screen saver came back on with the celestial sphere. I think whatever caused my problem with not being able to retutn to the celestial field, it was related to the Nortorn Internet Security running on my computer. Is it possible that at 26.4% completion that BOINC needed to reconnect to the einstein@home dataset to downlond even more data?

Someone mentioned that BOINC has a beta version of the BOINC Manager that has some bugs fixed. Well how do we download that beta version?

Thank you for your help.

Steve,

Glad you're back! I was beginning to think you had given up. Now to your problem.

Your second and third WU's also failed with a Client error message - possibly because of the Einstein 4.79 graphics bug. You need to try the Einstein Beta application - NOT the BOINC test program. (The BOINC test program is still in the Alpha stage and apparently still very buggy - so definitely stay with BOINC 4.45 for now.) The link to Einstein Beta can be found under More Information on the E@H home page. Now to Norton Internet Security: I also use NIS so I am somewhat familiar with how to set it up. First of all, you should enable it again ASAP. It's way too dangerous to connect to the internet without a firewall. When BOINC trys to connect to the inernet, NIS will probably display an alert message that recommends blocking the connection. You are also given the option of allowing it once or permitting all connections from BOINC. I would go with the "permit all" option. If you have somehow suppressed NIS alert messages, you can open NIS, select personal firewall and configure. Another NIS window should open. Select "Programs" and "Add". Then browse to find "boinc.exe" in the Program Files/BOINC folder. Again you can select "permit all" option (although you could get more sophicated and program only certain ports). Once that's done you should be OK. Remember, BOINC manages the Einstein application program (or any other project's app) and handles all the necessary connections to the internet. Therefore, you only have to configure NIS for BOINC.

Again, glad you are back. And, good luck!

I didn't address this issue in the previous post: I don't think NIS was at all related to the problem occurring. What I think happened was: "Einstein 4.79" encountered the "graphics bug" which, in turn, caused the "Client error" and ended the WU processing. BOINC then attempted to communicate with the Einstein web page to report the "failed results" and get a new WU. But, BOINC was blocked by NIS (just doing its job) because you haven't configured NIS to allow BOINC operations. Once you configure NIS (as I explained in the previous post) you should be OK.

Stick, Thanks so much for

Stick,
Thanks so much for all the information you have included in the responses to my most recent message. This is quite a learning experience. I had let so much time elapse from my first work unit that terminated, with about 26% completion, that when I attached to einstein.phys.uwm.edu my PC received a new WU. That work unit was processed on my PC starting on 10/7 for about three days. It got to about 50-60% completion and BOINC went into the idle mode.
At this point I read your most recent messages and made the NIS firewall configuration updates. I set to "permit all" the BOINC client and BOINC manager exchanges. After the update the screen saver is still in the idle mode.
Next I decided to try downloading the E@H Beta Test. When I read through the installation instructions it mentions that all current work will be terminated with a client error. I don't know If I have any hope of recovering the 60% workunit that my PC has completed up till this morning. So I thought I'd wait to see if BOINC snaps out of the idle mode before installing the E@H Beta Version.
Below are the most recent messages from this afternoon. I lost the morning messages.

Stephen, I think you are

Stephen,

I think you are almost there!

However, the reason things have gone idle is that you are "out of work" and you have reached your "daily" quota of WU's. (Einstein has reduced your "daily quota" to 1 because your recent history of failed results - an automatic "circuit breaker" to prevent you from failing and downloading over and over again. Once you return some valid results, your quota will automatically go back up to 8 (I think).) Anyway (assuming you read this soon), this would be a good time to install the BETA, since you don't have any work to complete.

You might be wondering how I know all this. If you click on your name next to your last message (in blue), you will open a window displaying some info about you. If you click on "view" computers, then on your "computer ID" and then on "results" in the following windows, you can see your recent history. Right now, you don't have any WU's listed as "in progress", but, if you read this tomorrow, you'll probably see one (i.e. your daily quota of 1).

If you don't install the BETA before you get your next WU, my guess is it will fail do to the "graphics bug" anyway. If this happens, install the BETA and wait until Thursday to get your next daily quota.

Good luck!

Stick, Well a professor

Stick,
Well a professor once told me every mistake must be made at least once. Well here I go again. As you suggested I downloaded the beta version of E@H and put the extracted files in programs\\BOINC\\projects\\einstein.phys.uwm.edu folder. But I did not terminate a workunit that somehow started automatically when I restarted my laptop this evening. Well to make a long story short, when I checked my messages as specified on the installation list, there is no reference to the new test version of einstein 0.18 on my BOINC message tab. So my question is how do I terminate that newly started workunit that is now about 2% done? It started automatically and seems to stop automatically.

Thanks again for all your help.

I think I've heard of your professor - if I remember correctly, his name is Murphy.

Since your WU is likely to crash anyway (because of the "graphics bug"), I would suggest that you do this: Open BOINC and click on the "Work" tab. Highlight (click on) the Einstein WU, then click "Abort". After this, you should exit BOINC and restart it. Your "Messages" should then include something like this (excerpted from somebody else's messages with a similar problem):

10/7/2005 10:42:52 PM||Starting BOINC client version 4.45 for windows_intelx86
10/7/2005 10:42:52 PM||Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC
10/7/2005 10:42:52 PM|Einstein@Home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform
10/7/2005 10:42:52 PM|Einstein@Home|Computer ID: XXXXXX; location: home; project prefs: default

The "anonymous platform" message is the one that indicates that the BETA app is ready to go. This should be followed by some messages having to do with "requesting 0 seconds seconds of work" (because you have reached your quota for today). After that, you'll just have to wait 'til tomorrow for your next WU.

I'll be "watching" tomorrow night. Hopefully, Murphy will go to bed early.

Stick, You have solved my

Stick,
You have solved my problem yet again. I did indeed start with a new work unit today. The message about the anonymous platform was there both yesterday and today. The graphics on the beta version of the E@H software seems a little less fluid. The graphics seem to more noticeably jump from one screen location to the next. The data does seem to be more quickly processed than before, my computer is already through more than 37% of the data.

Thanks again for all the help, this has been a good learning experience for me.

I am not exactly sure what you mean here - probably because it's been a long time since I have run Einstein 4.79. A possible explanation might be that, when the graphics were being dispayed with Einstein 4.79, your WU's had already terminated (due to the bug). Therefore, the screensaver didn't have to compete with any number crunching. Most people report that the Beta (Einstein 0.18) is actually a little slower than 4.79 (by about 10%). But, hopefully, it will work like it's supposed to and you will start getting some successful results for a change.

If you want to thank anybody, you can thank Norman Vincent (my HS Physics teacher, some 40+ years ago). He was quite a character. My knowledge and/or interest in gravity would probably still be in the pre-Newton/Apple stage had I not been in his class. I hope that inspires you a little!

BTW: I expect to see a new E@H high school team formed soon - with you as the leader and a bunch of your students as members.

Good luck and happy crunching!
