I greatly appreciate the helpful responses. I have downloaded the BOINC software and have not registered with BOINC. I go to the Berkeley BOINC website and see nothing about registration. How do I register with BOINC?

What I have tried is attaching to a project by double clicking on the BOINC icon on my desktop. This installs boinc which ultimately asks me to enter the project URL "einstein.phys.uwm.edu" and my account key all 32 characters. The einstein at home project is briefly displayed on a table then goes away. Nothing happens, no celestial sphere on the screen saver... Does this sound like a BOINC registration problem?

I have waited to begin this einstien@home project with a new computer a Dell laptop Pentium M processor 1.6GHz 512 MB memory with 80G hard drive, so I hope I have enough computing resources. I spend most of my time online via dial-up but we do have a faster T1-line connection at school.

I am just a high school teacher trying to learn about the gravity wave research to better explain the interferometers to my high school students.

Thanks for making this sort of research accessible to the public.

First of all, I need to apologize. My earlier statement was wrong. You do NOT register with BOINC - only with projects. (BOINC does generate an account key that it uses to cross reference - but you really don't need to know about it -so forget I said anything.) Secondly, I apologize to everybody else for the previous extraneous post. (I must have an over anxious index finger.)

Now to your problem. From what you describe, I am not sure BOINC has installed properly. The process should go something like this:

1. You download the installer program from BOINC.

2. You run the downloaded installer which creates the BOINC Manager program (accessible from the START menu). Once started the BOINC Manager should run all the time in the background (and be accessible by clicking the BOINC icon in the System Tray or maybe a from desktop shortcut).

3. If you open the BOINC Manager you should get a Window with buttons down the left side - one of which says "Attach to new project".

4. You click the "Attach to new project" button and another Window asks for the project URL and account key.

5. After you enter this info, the BOINC Manager must connect to the project (Einstein) to accomplish the following. It needs to establish the account (housekeeping). It needs to download the project application program (Einstein 4.79). And, it needs to download a work unit. (This could take a while on dial-up, so you might want to use your school T1 for this initial step.) But, the BOINC Manager should handle this with little or no input from you.

6. After that you should be up and running. And you can use the BOINC Manager to monitor what's going on and to control operational parameters.

At the top of the BOINC Manager Window, there are tabs labelled: Projects, Work, etc. If you click the Messages tab, you can track the communications between the BOINC Manager and the project. If you can get to the point where you can read the "Messages" and you are still having problems, you need to include the messages you have in your next post.

One more thing. Once you get cranking on a work unit and you start the screen saver graphics, you may have another problem. (There's a graphics bug related to running Einstein 4.79 and BOINC 4.45.) If you do, check out the Einstein Beta Test program under More Information on the E@H home page.

What could be the cause? Thanks for the help.

There are a couple of different possible causes.

1) Can you look at the web pages of Einstein from that computer? If not, there is a general connectivity problem.

2) Can you attach to ANY BOINC project? Please try another one just to see. If not, then there is a BOINC configuration issue or a proxy/firewall/router issue. If you can, then there is a DNS issue, or there is a problem with the project servers.

If there is a general connectivity issue from the computer, you have to solve that first.

Do you need to get through a proxy? (You should know if you do as you had to configure the browser to get through it as well). If so, please set BOINC to use the proxy.

Do you have a personal firewall? (if you have Windows XP SP2 you have one unless you have specifically turned it off). Please configure it to allow BOINC.exeto call out on port 80 (http). (If you are using 5.1.x or later, you will have to add port 443 (https) as well). If you wish to do remote control of the BOINC from other machines, and for some personal firewalls to control the local host, you will have to allow BOINC.exe to act as a server for ports 1043 and 31416. BOINCMgr.exe will have to be allowed access on ports 1043 and 31416 in the cases where BOINC.exe had to be allowed to serve them.

Do you have a router? Is it configured correctly?

I hope somebody "who knows what they are doing" also responds to this. Unfortunately, I don't really don't qualify. However, it looks to me like the problem lies in the ". . . needs to establish the account (housekeeping)" stage I described in my last post. That is, you have not gotten to the "download the project application program (Einstein 4.79)" stage yet. Again, remembering that I really don't know what I am doing, I would suggest, if you don't get a response from a more knowledgeable source soon, that you try "Uninstalling" the BOINC Manager using the Windows "Add or Remove" Control Panel and start over again. Also, after, "Uninstalling" and before "Reinstalling", I would check to make sure the BOINC folder in the Program Files" folder is empty and/or gone.

I turned off the firewall on

I turned off the firewall on my new laptop and sure enough I was able to attach to the project and the screen saver has begun to show the rotating celestial sphere. Now I will have to setup the ports and other parameters to enable the firewall to permit the BOINC commands and interactive calls. I have no network expertise and will try to decipher the port numbers to apply to my situation.

One other thing. I have been connected to a project now for about 20 minutes and so far I have no credits. So I assume that means I have not received any data yet. The BOINC icon that moves about the screen on the screen saver did say that BOINC was idle.

Thanks to all for the expert advice.

Glad to hear you've connected! Also, glad John McLeod was able to point you in the right direction. As to your credit - you won't get any credit until you have completed a work unit, returned your results, and your results have been verified. (Three other computers will get the same work unit you have and Einstein will compare them.) It will probably take your computer 8 to 10 hours to process a work unit. And it may take a few more days for Einstein to get all four units back and validate the results. In the meantime, you can click on the BOINC Manager's "Work" tab to monitor progress of your work unit. However, your decription of what the screen is doing now, may indicate that you are experiencing the Einstein 4.79/BOINC 4.45 graphics bug. Your work unit may have failed already because of this. If this is the case, check the Einstein@Home Beta Test under "More Information" on the E@H home page. Then connect again and get a new work unit.

I've looked at your results list on the website and can see that you have two results. The first terminated abnormally with a client error. The second is still processing. You should be able to see the error messages in a text file in your BOINC folder. Here is the message as shown on the website :-

Quote:

Core Client version 4.45
Access is denied. (0x5) - exit code 5 (0x5)

Failed to open checkpoint-file for writing. Exiting.

From this message it would appear that you don't have permission to write in the BOINC folder. Did you install as administrator and now are you running as an ordinary user? You just need to fix up your folder permissions.

Cheers,
Gary.

On Saturday and Sunday the

On Saturday and Sunday the BOINC Manager continued to work and generate the rotating celestial sphere for several hours on Saturday and Sunday. But on Sunday I came in to use the laptop and noticed the percentage completed was 26.4%. Ever since that use the BOINC Manager has remained idle and I cannot seem to restart it. I wonder if this is caused by a bug that Stick mentioned in an earlier message. The screen saver shows the BOINC icon with the message, the BOINC Manager is idle. Is this typical for the BOINC Manager to abruptly stop or is there a bug?

Thanks for the help.

Obviously, I don't know what's under your Messages tab; but, it sounds to me like the bug has struck. If I were you, I'd give the Beta App a try. (I've been running it for about 6 weeks now and all the work units I have processed in that time have completed without problem and were validated. And, if I remember correctly our systems are very similar - Dell laptaps running Windows XP.)
