No program outside Terminal

I'm having kind of a strange problem. I'm reasonably certain that BOINK is doing what it's supposed to and sending data back to the project. The issue is that I have no graphics. Actually, I have no visable program at all.

I have a brand new iBook G4 and it's my first Mac. I also have no programing experience, whatsoever. Basically, I have no idea what I'm doing. Nevertheless, I decoded the installation instructions (something about chmod + the executable...), figured out what "Terminal" is, and managed to install the program. It looks like it's running on my computer's activity log utility and I've recieved some credit on my account.

The thing is, the only trace of the program on my computer is a generic icon, which opens in Terminal when I double click on it (but not when I start up the computer). No graphics. No screensaver. No tabs to adjust settings. Just the Terminal log. I'm extremely confused. Can anyone help me?

No program outside Terminal

All the chatter you hear on these boards about screensavers and all the rest is for Windows users.

For now, Mac users are left with what you see. No screensaver, fancy icons, or tabs to adjust settings.

The good news is that you're not wasting any processor time on fancy screensaver graphics.

There is a new free graphic interface program called Deep Thought that you can download. There's no screensaver, but it allows you to do all the basic things, like attach other boinc projects, reset your project, update your projects. You can download it at: http://www.greenkeepersoftware.com/

And you probably already

And you probably already know, but in case you don't, you can use Activity Monitor, located in your Applications Folder, inside the Utilities folder, to check that Einstein is running.

Well, that explains a lot. :)

Well, that explains a lot. :) I wish there had been better instructions, though. Any idea when the full program will be availible for Mac?

I think it is on their list of things to do, I remember one of the developers mentioned it once somewhere. But I don't remember exactly what he (Bruce) said. He actually reads this board and replies, so maybe he'll chime in.

If you write some 'first time user' instructions and post them here, I'd be happy to put them onto the FAQ page.

See: this FAQ entry for some information about how to see the screensaver *right now* on a MAC.

A number of us are testing the BOINC graphical interface on the MAC right now. However the BOINC development team has asked us to not distribute it yet. Hopefully it will only be a matter of some weeks.

I received this E-mail from Greenkeeper Software about Deep Thought:

Dear Deep Thought Users,

Great news! Deep Thought has been adopted by BOINC and has been repackaged and rereleased as BOINC Menubar.

Although GreenKeeper Software will continue to maintain and update BOINC Menubar, it is now being distributed by BOINC.

BOINC Menubar is very closely based on Deep Thought v1.1 with a few bug fixes and a minor features added.

If you are interested in downloading BOINC Menubar or would like to find out more information, please use the following links:

Download Page: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

Direct Download: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/BOINC_Menubar_4.25_mac.zip

Documentation: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/menubar.php

Thanks for your continuing support of GreenKeeper Software.

All the best,
GreenKeeper Software

I think most MAC users will be much happier using this software than following instructions, no matter how well written, for using Command Line interface.
