Just saw on the BOINC message boards that there is a new reccommended version...
5.2.9
It is supposed to solve the connection failure problems, but I don'tknow if it actually does. Luckily I haven't run into that problem.

Kathryn,
Thank you for the heads-up. :-) Today was the first in a while that I failed to check the "Download Boinc" link for updates.

5.2.12 is out! Going through revisions like hotcakes.
Yes, and 5.2.12 IS official,
)
Yes, and 5.2.12 IS official, unlike 5.2.11. Now, why do you think that could be? BECAUSE 5.2.11 WAS DEVELOPER-ONLY, never meant to be distributed, which is why it was available only from the dev ftp site. Until some eager person decided to paste links on public forums, it was hidden, and properly so. I hope to God that those whom we encouraged to run out and install it don't have a rash of problems, and get tired of version-of-the-day updates. Terrible time to pull this stunt, with tons of newbies coming in. Let's try to use a little bit more restraint and discretion in the future, huh?

Michael, I feel like this is aimed at me (just a little bit). But it wasn't a developers only version. If you read the info about the app, Rom made a typo when updating the download site.
But I agree this 4 versions in 24 (or so) hours is a bit too much.
No hard feelings.

No, Kathryn, not at you, or anyone in particular. I first saw it on the Seti site, and it was spread all over there in a matter of an hour or so, pointing squarely at the dev ftp.
(edit) I quit Seti for what I considered "fool's work", not science, long ago, and never registered in their forum to post there, since I care not what they do.

RE: But it wasn't a
)
Yep - (IIRC, it's been a long day) he updated the "changes since" file, but the link still said "10"... and he posted on the SETI boards that 11 was available and he was going to bed. When people were saying "but where is it", several gave them the direct link, as the fix in 11 was specifically what they needed.
I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of NOT giving people the link to the "beta of the week" (or in this case hour...) but theoretically at any rate ANY version with a "2" in the middle digit is "production". If it was supposed to be beta, it would be a "3". Although I think in the crush of bug-fixing this last couple of days, nobody has bothered actually _doing_ that...
There are definitely downsides to having this many versions this quickly. Confusion is only the most obvious. But the connection problems just didn't show up until the "crush" hit, and I give Rom a great deal of credit for being able to fix one issue, then the next, then the next, that quickly. I wouldn't tell "everyone" to update to the latest immediately - but if they were having connection problems, you'd want to point them at the very newest you could get in the series, or you knew you otherwise you were trading one problem for (maybe) another. THAT would have driven the new users nuts; better if they could "skip" a couple of versions, and not download _every_ one.
Oh - there's even already an optimized version of 5.2.11 out there...
The blame, if any, for the rapid version-ladder has to go to the developers though, and not those who were trying to keep up with which version to recommend for what. Kathryn and Pooh Bear and Halifax-lad did the service of spreading the word from SETI to all the other projects, as everyone was so busy. I may be the only other person checking _all_ (well, 6) sets of boards, because I made the decision to limit myself to answering mostly Mac questions; the poor Windows guys at SETI were getting over one question per MINUTE at one point.
EDIT::: I just did my scan and there were NO new postings, anywhere, since my last scan, even though it took me a few minutes to write this... it's time for a good stiff drink and off to bed. :-)
EDIT AGAIN:: Just remembered, in 10(?) the "Ready to report" was changed to "Acknowledged" as they finally admitted "Ready" implies some action is needed. Something else to watch out for.
Actually Version 5.2.11 was
)
Actually Version 5.2.11 was official, it was issued at or about 1 o'clock in the morning California time and Rom had been working most of the day watching the arrival of 5000+ thousand new people transfering from Seti Classic. Probably due to his tirednes, he just forgot or didn't check that the link was working correctly. When was the last time you made a mistake.
And it was on the Seti boards so that people who could spare the odd hour helping out the new registree's would know where it was and how to direct people to it.
