BOINC Manager is not able to start a BOINC client. Please run the client and try again.

Hi John,

this is a problem independent of the screensaver/graphics discussed here. I suggest you give Keith's advise a try (thanks Keith!). If the problem persists, please open a dedicated thread in our Problems section.

Cheers,
Oliver

No luck with the version of Windows I am running.  I leave it on and most of the time it cycles between the two screens for the BOINC program, however, I have seen it rarely with the star globe running and it will go to the desktop for a while.  I'd really like to see more of the star globe than the BOINC information.

The graphics may need a few seconds to start up and establish connection to the application. Depending on your screensaver settings the screensaver may switch to another task too early. You can adjust the times how long the screensaver stays in one view by clicking Settings in the Screen Saver Properties window (of Windows, not BOINC).

Hi Oliver, This is

Hi Oliver,

This is something strange behavior. This computer I am using now initially had Astronomy Linux 18.04 Ubuntu. I then upgraded the OS to 20.04. I Then used the software catalog on the OS to download and install BOINC. I clicked on the BOINC Manager to start it. I added the Einstein@Home project and clicked on the show graphics button. It opened a new window and I enlarged it with the sphere working great.

After I had enough for the day I quit the BOINC Manager and shut down the computer as normal. No issues.

That was two days ago. When I once again started this same computer and clicked on the BOINC Manager it opens with the normal window showing the working tasks. However the show graphics button is now greyed out and there is no screen saver sphere.

I followed what Keith suggested to the link of additional guidelines which was a list of command lines to try. A couple required me to change them to reflect my user name. Which I did. The first two on the list returned error messages telling me that the file already exists, The rest on that list appeared to work as expected. No errors returned.

Still no sphere screensaver as the show graphics button was still greyed out. I also decided to delete the BOINC Manager, shut down and restart the computer and reinstall the BOINC Manager. Same result.

I am stumped. Why would I get a sphere screen saver with the initial installation of BOINC Manager but not again when all I did was shut down the computer for a couple of days and restart it?

Regards,

John

Hi Oliver and all. I have

Hi Oliver and all.

I have an update. I decided to see what would happen if I experimented with the BOINC Computing Preferences. I unchecked two of the "When to Suspend" check boxes; Suspend when computer is in use and Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use. The Show Graphics button changed and was no longer greyed out. I clicked on the Show Graphics button and a new window appeared with the sphere screensaver.

Why should this be the case?

Regards,

John

John, this is an unrelated

John, this is an unrelated issue that should have been discussed in a separate thread (see my earlier post on that). Now that you've replied here I'll stick to it as well, but please consider this next time. Thank you.

From what you're describing it sounds like you might be running a GPU task? In that case BOINC disables the screensaver/graphics as those are likely to collide with the GPU computing (on single GPU systems), if I remember correctly. Now that you've effectively suspended it, graphics are enabled again.

Instead of resizing you may also just toggle "real" fullscreen mode using ENTER. Also, be sure to check the Graphics Settings in your preferences for more tuning options.

Thanks Oliver for the advice

Thanks Oliver for the advice to toggle real full screen by hitting enter. That works great!

By graphics settings are you referring to the orientation, resolution, refresh rate and Fractional Scaling? What are the best settings for the Celestial sphere? Here are my current settings on my HP dual boot notebook:

Orientation - Landscape

Resolution - 1600 x 900 (16:9)

Refresh rate - 60.00 Hz

Fractional Scaling - currently not enabled (greyed out)

I am fairly happy with these settings. I can experiment to see if any changes in these make things even better.

John

Erm, no. Did you follow the link I gave you in the very same sentence? There you'll find them :)

Great! I just followed the Preferences link. I didn't understand that you meant the projects (my account) preferences. I left most of the settings alone and saved them. I will need to investigate more before I change them. Thanks!
