First task on my G4 400mhz

First task on my G4 400mhz finished in 233,163.50 sec. Can't tell wether it's a speed increase yet since the results usually vary between 230 000 and 280 000 sec to finish.

Looks like there's not much benefit on G5. Anyone running this on G4?

Jup, here. Mac Mini G4 1,5 GHz
Just finished a WU with the old 4.03 app for better comparsion.
Installing the new app right now. ...

edit:
WU with 4.03: h1_0798.05_S5R2__143_S5R3a / 93,802.05 sec / 237.83 cr / 0,00253545 cr/sec
WU with 4.29: h1_0788.45_S5R2__109_S5R3a / ?? / ?? / ??

Maybe someone can predict/calculate the estimated variation/time for this 2 ranges.

WU with 4.29: h1_0788.45_S5R2__109_S5R3a / 81,070.51 sec / 237.40 cr / 0,00292831 cr/sec

4.29 finished a 0788.45 unit in 22h compared to 26h with 4.03 for a 0798.05 unit, but that was differend ranges, so I can't tell if there was an improvment in calculating time.

RE: I'm going to put the G5

I'm going to put the G5 back on SETI. Compared to the Intel Core processors, the G5 comes up short on speed for Einstein@Hone.

Although it’s a test project*, you might consider giving Milkyway@home a try: IME their current app (astronomy 1.x) runs very nicely on the PPC. My Core2 Duo iMac runs it just fine, but on my G5 and G4s it yields as much credit per CPU-hr as do Alex Kan’s optimized SETI@home apps, or even a little more.

BTW, no problems so far with S5R3 v4.29. I haven’t yet got my act together to make a proper comparison with the standard version’s running times, but my initial impression is that they’re pretty similar.

* This can imply some extra ‘babysitting’, but so far I’ve actually had considerably less trouble with their Mac app than I’ve had on some ostensibly ‘mature’ projects … Moreover, they’ve already published some preliminary results!

ok second WU reported (not

ok second WU reported (not yet validated) 71900 seconds for 237 credits so this app is not faster than the standard app; same speed.

Seems to be appr. 20% faster

Seems to be appr. 20% faster than the previous version: 42,000 seconds with 4.29 versus 53,000 seconds with 4.03. That's a good start. Up'ed from 15% to 25% Einstein. So far all WUs validated o.k.

ok second WU validated 71900

Martin.P it's surprizing that you have a 20% speed boost whereas other crunchers doesn't; is it same size of WU for each ? is it your two PowermacG5 same CPU ? (i think that it's a Bi-CPU 2,7Ghz using 4.29 and a Bi-core 2,3Ghz CPUusing 4.03)

I really think there is significant speedup on G4 while almost none on G5, probably due to the second FPU the G5 has.

Martin.P, you're running a G4, right?

I can't verify the speedup on

I can't verify the speedup on G4s. Installed it on a Powermac G4 400mhz and an iBook G4 1.33 ghz. 3 WUs validated, at best there is a speedup of 5% so far.

Ouch, my 2nd task took

Ouch, my 2nd task took 139,000 sec to complete. Right in the range of previous apps. Afterward, I turned my processor setting to Highest from automatic. I'm going to see if it makes much of a difference. The fan makes a bit more noise, but I think I have done this in the past without seeing much of a speed difference between automatic and highest on the processor setting. (G5 1.8Ghz imac with panther)

Bernd,

I run a G5 Dual 2.7 GHz and a G5 Dual 2.5 GHz. Both are single-core. I migrated the 2.5 only yesterday while the 2.7 is running the new version for 9 days already. Unfortunately the validated WUs disappear very quickly so I cannot directly compare the WUs from the 2.7. However, I did notice that the difference between the 2.5 and 2.7 is linear with the frequency, and I did see a significant speed-up when I ran the first WUs with 4.29 (at that time there were a few older WUs in my stats-page).

Check out the 2 machines: PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz and PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz. In all BOINC projects the 2.7 is appr. 8% faster than the 2.5. However, in E@H running the different clients it is more than 20% faster. I expect the first results with 4.29 on the 2.5 machine sometime this night, so let's wait and see.
