Ok, the new app doesn't get used until you complete all previously loaded WUs. I missunderstood, thought the beta app would take over as soon as the WUs started by the default app were completed.

That's actually pretty weird - my machines here are all G4 and show the 20% speedup of the AltiVec code. I really wonder why the very same code doesn't have any (positive) effect on G5 machines. The only thing I can think of is that the G5 further optimizes the old AltiVec code by out-of-order execution so much that it doesn't gain anything from the new code. I'll have to consult some people more knowledgeable than me...
IIRC out-of-order execution is part of the PowerPC spec, but I'm inclined to agree with your assessment.
I'm gonna ask everyone for a huge favor: Go into Terminal, type in machine, and post the result as well as your observed speed increase/decrease. For example:

It may be that certain G4 variants are seeing the speed boost, while others do not.

Two very similar WU's gave the following (success, not yet validated) :
Albert 4.39 23,091 s
Albert 4.56 19,491 s
machine = ppc970 (Powermac G5

machine = ppc970 (Powermac G5 Quad @ 2.5 GHz with SECED memory)
So far all of the Albert 4.56 WU's that are verified have passed.
Don't really see much difference in processing times vs 4.39.

Well, it looks like there's a speed boost for ppc7450 but not ppc970, so I think my hypothesis was right.
Anyone got a G4 that isn't a 7450?
