My friend has a strange problem. She has a laptop running win7. After running E@H for ten minutes her laptop shuts down everytime. Stopping Boinc and her machine never shuts down. She has re-installed Boinc twice and set her comp to never shut off yet it still shuts down after exactly 10 minutes even with the cover open. She has very little programs on the machine and no infections thet I can find using several tools. Does anyone know what is happening here? thanks

laptop shutdown

Heat.

Obviously the machine is overheating after ten minutes and shutting down to make sure it's not damaged.

So either check for dust-bunnies in the laptop, as far as that's possible, or get her something like a laptop cooler. Or don't let her run Einstein on her laptop.

Einstein especially will make the CPU very hot, as it runs with SSE and SSE2. These CPU extensions will heat a CPU extra. Want to run a project that runs things a lot cooler? Try for Milkyway (non-GPU) or MalariaControl.Net.

Differences measured on my i3-530, Einstein Gravitational Wave S6 will run at 55C, Milkyway runs at 49C, Malaria runs at 43C.

Just let her run something like http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ to see the temperatures.

As Jord says, it will be heat

As Jord says, it will be heat related.

You need to check four things (at least).

1. Are any air inlet points (usually underneath) blocked with fluff?
2. Is there good clearance to allow fresh air to get to the inlet points?
3. Is there a good flow of air? Maybe the fan has dry bearings or is not running. Can you sense the fan ramping up when you start BOINC? Does the airflow dramatically improve at that point?
4. Is the CPU heatsink itself blocked with fluff?

The last one is probably the most likely and is certainly the most difficult to deal with. However, you can use google to find out how to dismantle your particular model and you should be able to find detailed instructions with good pictures. It is certainly a job that can be done by the average handyman with the right tools and a bit of care. The guides usually tell you exactly what tools you will need, as well as step by step instructions on what to do.

Even if you decide to stop running a DC project, you should address the heat problem anyway since you will probably find that the machine starts shutting down during normal use as the problem gets worse.

Cheers,
Gary.

I have 5 Projects Running on

I have 5 Projects Running on my Desktop, which combined consists of 11 Tasks at the time I am Posting This Message. My system only runs a certain amount of Tasks at one time as Per Preferences that I have set. I keep an eye on the Date due of the tasks, and occsionally Suspend Each Task (Randomly depending on Current Status of task). by doing this, I can give preference to the Tasks that are due for completion earlier than others. What I would do, in your case, if she wishes to Run Einstein Projects, is to occasionally Suspend The einstein Tasks, and maybe only run One einstein task at a particular time. Also, whilst running the Einstein Task/s, Suspend any of the other Projects that you have plenty of time to complete, and even sometimes Only Run Einstein. But DO NOT run EinsteinAtHome Projects Continuously. Just a Suggestion: I hope it helps.

Something else that just came to mind is the Ammount of RAM and The OS on the Laptop. My Laptop (which is actually a HP NOTEBOOK) is running Windows 7 Home Premium, and only has 2GB of RAM. In reality, 2GB of RAM is barely enough to Run The System Itself even when I Do not have any Programs Open. The RAM USAGE (utilised by the OS and anything that might occasionally be Running in the background) is usually between 50 and 90 Percent. This doesn't really give any Practical Memory (RAM) Space to Operate Programs. what I'm getting at is if she is Running Similar Specs on her laptop to mine, or even worse case scenario of Running a Higher grade OS on only 2GB RAM, the problem could be related to that. I am not Running BOING Projects on My Laptop for that very reason. In fact, My Desktop (referred to in the above Quote, is Running on 4GB RAM and it still will not Run at Full Capacity, although as I mentioned in the above Quote, I do not have the Preferences Set at very high limits.

My HP 635 laptop is running

My HP 635 laptop is running 24/7. I first put it on two plastics rods to allow air intake, then increased its 2 GB RAM to 8 GB, at a 70 euro cost, then bought a 120 GB solid state disk for 90 euro, put it in and loaded SuSE Linux 12.2, BOINC 6.10.58, Einstein@home,SETI@home and Test4Theory@home. To run the last I had to install VirtualBox 4.2.4. The CPU is an AMD APU E-450 which burns only 18 W. When I bought it for 265 euro it had SuSE SLES11 sp1 installed, but since they did not give me any CD or DVD with an OS I had to install a OpenSuSE OS downloaded on my other Linux box, a SUN WS with an Opteron 1210 burning 75 W.
On hot summer days with 30 C in my room I had to shutdown the SUN with screaming fans, while the HP only whirred.
