How do I switch BOINC's usage between CPU and GPU?

Hi all,

I hope this doesn't seem like a dumb question. :) Is there a way to set BOINC to use only my GPU, or only my CPU? Apparently using the GPU makes the computing faster, so I would prefer if it exclusively used the GPU.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

In your account, go to Project preferences, edit them and select Use CPU = no, Use GPU = yes. Save changes to the web site, then the next time your BOINC contacts the project it will use those preferences for Einstein only.

Do know though that the ABP2 CUDA application will still use the CPU.

HiJesse,

no dumb question at all. E@H GPU-apps are programmed to use GPU and CPU. All you can do is disable GPU-apps via preferences page.

Hi Ageless, Thank you for

Hi Ageless,

Thank you for your reply. Here's a quick follow-up question: I have an ATI Radeon HD4350 512MB Graphics card. The setting on Project Preferences specifies NVIDIA only and makes no mention of ATI. At the same time, my logs in the BOINC application complain about my machine having no NVIDIA GPU. If I turn off CPU and keep the GPU option on, will the BOINC application have any issues defaulting to my ATI GPU?

Thanks again.

CUDA only works on Nvidia

Message 98990 in response to message 98989

CUDA only works on Nvidia GPUs, it won't work on ATI. That there is only an Nvidia GPU option in the preferences is because the server software recognizes that this project uses a CUDA application. Would it also use a Stream (Brook+) application, then the ATI GPU option would be available.

In other words, you cannot use your ATI GPU on this project other than to look at the graphics/screen saver. You can use it on Collatz, DNETC and possibly Milkyway if your GPU can do double precision math.

Which means if you turn off the CPU here at Einstein, that you won't get any Einstein work at all.
