    This has been happening for a while (weeks at least), and I'm not sure what triggered it.  It may have been the Sierra update.

    I've reinstalled BOINC (to the same, latest version) with no effect.

    This is on a late 2014 Retina iMac with AMD Radeon R9 M295X.  Running macOS 10.12 (16A323).

      Also, I tested SETI@Home, and its OpenCL GPU work units execute just fine.

          I forget now exactly when, but this started working again [for me] a few weeks back.
