One of the reasons I like the Xeons I got from Dell is for about what I used to pay for a mahor upgrade to my "game" machines I got effectively 4 CPUs...

If I did not have a brand new mortgage to pay down, I would love to consider getting another one of those in a month or two ... or a dual G5 2.7 GHz ... :)

Oh come on Paul, go for the G5 2.7, or by then we might see dual core G5's.

I'm dreaming of a dual, dual core G5, but then it is just a dream for now.

Hard to believe that Apple will get to dual dual-core G5, given that they are up against the thermal wall with the dual 2.7 G5s (having to go with expensive water-cooling) and the move to Intel next year.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see a version of OS X for x86 soon, though.

Already exists. I don't know what stage the beta is in, but, the x86 are, if memory serves, due late 2006.

It is sad really. The G5 chip is a screamer for math applications. Using Intel P4/Xeons makes the only difference in performance the efficiency of OS-X.

I think it is the wrong way to go, Apple has always done best when they use contraian approaches. When they try to go "mainstream" "Me-To!", they lose.

I was going to, over time, convert to all Apple. But, if the only advantage is OS-X, well, I might buy Apple for a workstation. But, for just a cruncher (most of my machines use the low cost options for non-speed critical sections - like video), why not buy a "stock" Dell for less?

The Intel based Apple will not have any intrinsic advantage in speed over any other commodity produced Intel based machines.

I am still debating a 2.7 GHz Dual G5, but, now with a mortgage again, well, waiting to see if the price drops just before the Intel based machines come out is more viable.
