dual-core athlon boinc setup?

I have a new dual-core athlon computer that I am trying to get set up & running E@H. The BIOS is unequivocal that it recognizes the dual core. Win2000 also seems to recognize the dual-core, although its messages are not quite so clear. But E@H is undoubtedly only processing one unit.

I suppose I could try installing a second copy of BOINC, but my past experience is that when I have installed a single copy of BOINC, it recognized multiple processors or hyperthreading & processed two units of E@H simultaneously without any user intervention.

Any suggestions on how to get BOINC/E@H to use both cores?

Thanks,

Make sure you acount preferneces are set to use 2 CPUs. If it is set to only 1, BOINC will use only one.

If it is set to 1, change it to 2, then use update to contact the scheduler and have it down load the updated preferences.

Thanks for your quick response, but I just now checked my boinc preferences & they were already set to 2. Any other suggestions?

ADDMP,

Is this a fresh install of Win2k or an existing system you're running on new hardware?

Check that Windows recognizes and is using the second processor.

Run the "System" control panel applet and select the Hardware tab. Click "Device Manager", then open the "Computer" branch and see whats there. You'll see one entry for each processor Windows is using. If you see one entry showing "Uniprocessor", you have the wrong HAL and kernel installed. If you see one entry showing Multiprocessor" you have the right HAL and kernel, but Windows is only detecting one processor.

Also check for any "error" devices - they'll show with an exclamation mark on the left.

I hesitate to make any suggestions for fixing it until I know what the device manager shows, just too many ways to mess things up and requite a wipe_and_reinstall of Windows. [edited so it made more sense]

Per your account, Windows is only telling Boinc it has one processor.

You are on the correct service pack. I think I would check the BOIS again, to make sure it's turned on to use both.

ADDMP,

If you have an older Motherboard, it may not be able to use the dual-core capabilities. Try going to the mobo manufacturer's website - support - downloads and see if there is a BIOS update for your model, and maybe they'll have details listed about dual-core compatibility.

Respects,

Michael

Do you run BOINC 4.72?

Message 18322 in response to message 18318

Thanks. I did a fresh installation of Win2000 on a new motherboard & cpu.

I tried controlpanel>system>hardware>devicemanager>computer. It says

"Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC".

No mention of either "multiprocessor" or "uniprocessor".

I do happen to have an older dual AthlonMP running & it says

"ACPI Muntiprocessor PC"

so that does look suspicious.

I checked for "YELLOW" devices. There were two: USB & RAID. I turned them both off & the devices page now boots clean, but there is still no mention of "multiprocessor".

(Re-installation is not a great problem at this point, but I'm beginning to suspect the motherboard & its BIOS, although ASUS claims dual-core support.)

I think I am running BOINC 4.45. Do you know of a dual-core problem with some versions?

Thanks. I am using an ASUS A8V Deluxe with the latest BIOS. It is newly-purchased but not the latest technology. (I needed many old PCI slots.) ASUS CLAIMS dual-core support with this BIOS & this cpu.

Thanks, I looked through the BIOS again but could find no way to turn on or off the dual-core. The motherboard maker (ASUS A8V Deluxe) does claim dual core support with this (the latest) BIOS version. The BIOS opening page does report a dual core athlon, but a report might not be the same as a functioning dual core.
