BTW.Closing services of no use saves little memory too.
After an XP installation I almost close half of them.
I don't use defrag automatic on my farmboxes and so on..
Closing Windows Services is a very good idea, it disables a lot of worms to attack your machine. It is at least as safe as installing a firewall. Here is a tool to shut down all those services which are almost useless for a machine @home. http://www.dingens.org/

Please be aware that those first three I have indicated with double stars are turned on whenever I check for updates, which I do on a weekly basis and the last one is required if you use Windows XP cd-burning capability.
Also, the items between dotted lines are NOT Windows XP services, and that the XP firewall should only be turned off if you have something else to put in it's place, such as Zone Alarm.
Finally I am the ONLY user here, so have no need for access to a local network, nor for multiple user support, no functional printer at the moment (ink is pricey over here) and finally I run on a dial-up, which has different requirements to ADSL or wireless.

Looking at task manager, the BOINC shell eats 3M, and the Einstein application another 6.2, hardly a huge memory footprint. It shouldn't be close to causing paging.
As for the large AMD performance lead, I suspect there is something inherent in the program's execution that just happens to work poorly on Intel chips. Either that, or the compiler is not doing a good job optimizing for the Pentium core. The AMD chips are, in general, 'smarter,' and less dependent on compiler optimizations. A recompile with Intel specific settings might help quite a bit. (Just a SWAG.)
