I've been participating in Einstein since Feb 2005 and accrued WU credit for the project is second only to SETI; which I joined 1999 before BOINC was even a glimmer in anybody's imagination.
Today I tried to post a response to a thread in Cruncher's Corner forum, only to be rebuffed on grounds that I don't merit such privilege; I fail to meet the minimum requirements of idle processing-cycles donated towards the "science" the project punitively is dedicated to, so as to be afforded and bestowed the luxury of posting privileges. If that sort of ham-fisted control is required to keep order on the forums, I believe a bunch of squabbling kindergartners are the overwhelming pool of resource that the Einstein@Home project relies upon.
Quite frankly I'm appalled at the elitist attitude dripping from such statement. I feel this to be a personal affront and the epitome of snobbery. What I wanted to know is if there's any chance of a non-SSE2+ capable CPU - PIII-1400S w/ 3x512 MB PC150 SDRAM hosted on 15k RPM U320 SCSI HDD Win2003 R2 system platform - of ever obtaining any WU's to crunch.
That notwithstanding, I'm not sure I even care for the answer; I'll never donate a single idle processing cycle to Einstein@Home ever - even if I spend $5,000 and obtain the bleeding-edge hardware necessary to be in your snobbish elitist condescending club - again.

If this rule is in place to prevent spam, why does it allow posting in *any* forum group? As the Professor has demonstrated the rule does not apply for "Problems and Bug Reports" (and maybe other forum groups too?)
I understand why you want to allow new users to post about their problems getting things working without requiring a working machine. Or you get a Catch 22.
But ... if spammers can post in some forum groups, what's the point of preventing them from posting in others?
Seems the RAC rule is unenforceable and pointless.

Because if you truly have a problem and can't post to ANY group why would you even try to get it fixed or stay? Giving the people an option to post in this thread gives them at least a chance to say 'help me' before they leave and never come back.

The point of my post was not to argue for requiring RAC in every group. My point is the opposite: Since you need to have some groups open (which I agree with) then there is no point protecting other groups with a RAC requirement, thus making the RAC rule pointless.

The point is thought that spammers want to post where we who use the forums look most often, not someplace that we may look at every once in a great while. The old 'best bang for your time' thing. It also makes it easier to moderate if you only have one place to look for spammers. Being a former forum moderator, at another project, I can tell you that moderating people who WANT to be ornery can be a pain, having only one place to look makes it very easy. Someone posts, boom it's gone long before 99% of people even know it was ever there.
