I haven't gotten any new work in about a week. Here I use a MAC Mini using Leopard 10.5.3 and BOINC 5.10.45.

I pressed the Update button and here is a copy of the Message. Why does it say I requested 0 seconds of work for Einstein?

Think laterally :-).

You want BOINC to get E@H work but BOINC doesn't think that would be a good idea - for a variety of possible reasons. So if BOINC doesn't want to get new work, it just tells you it will get 0 seconds worth :-). It's not saying what you requested at all. It's simply telling you what it intends to request in order to meet its commitments.

This question comes up time and time again. If you look at this very recent thread you will see that the sixth post in the thread is asking virtually the identical question. The two posts that follow (by Alinator and myself) should give you enough information to fully understand the situation for yourself.

Thank you for offering to help. I looked up the answer to the virtually identical question that you cited but cannot follow the answer for the reason that I have a Mac and not a PC. Near as I can tell and I might be wrong about this but I cannot find files named client_state.xml or global_prefs_override.xml. This might be because I have just switched from the PC to the MAC and am still learning. I did a search with the spotlight search tool and these file names don't turn up. In general I am still learning where the MAC keeps its preference files for the applications.

I hope you can adapt your answer to the MAC

Unfortunately, the answer is not specific to the hardware or OS. I've never used a Mac in my life but I would be mightily surprised if there was any essential difference in the BOINC configuration and preference files for the various platforms on which it runs. If you can find the folder where BOINC is installed, all the files I've mentioned should be there.

You must be looking in the wrong place. These files are not Mac preference files and will not be present in system folders. They are specific to BOINC and will be in the BOINC installation folder, wherever you decided to create that during installation of BOINC. For example, I use both Windows and Linux. In Windows, the default installation folder is C:\\Program Files\\BOINC. In Linux it is /home/gary/BOINC for me. There must also be a default location for the Mac but I don't know where that would be.

Until you can find those files and look up the values of the various variables that I listed, I can't give a definitive answer to you question. In all probability, the guess I gave to the poster in the other thread will probably apply to you as well.

Jim,

Both of the still visible tasks are a month old and the error code was 99. If you follow through the logic about code 99 in Bernd's sticky about client errors, you will conclude that he had bad data (failed a consistency check) at the time. He mentioned that he last had tasks a week or so ago (long enough to have expired from the database, so probably about 2 weeks ago) so I concluded that the earlier problem had probably been solved with newer (and consistent) data.

Nobody is going to get mad at you but we will certainly try to "educate" you :-).

You need to read instructions a bit more carefully :-).

In the other thread, this is what I wrote (I've added emphasis to what you didn't pick up on) :-

You can browse both files with a text editor like notepad but be careful not to make/save any changes.

Now I know that notepad is a windows specific text editor but there must be a similar program for the Mac that allows you to browse text as text rather than execute it as code. You see, the files I listed are .xml files - they are actually code to be executed, but human readable code. You have actually executed the code rather than browsed it and whilst the output is still human readable, it is more difficult to extract the information you are wanting to see quickly. If you want to find out more about what XML really is, stick those 3 letters into google and go read all about it :-).

So all you need to do is open those files with a text editor rather than an internet browser. Here is a short example (from client_state.xml on one of my hosts) of what you will see:-

0.999861
-1.000000
0.999922
0.984546
1209421466.915125

The values of interest are clearly identified by the leading and closing tags which tell you exactly what each data item represents. These tags get stripped out when you execute the file as code.

Please have another go at getting the information for your host.

Thank you for your response. I have learned that there is in fact a text editor in the MAC and the name of the program is Text Edit.
