There are many possible reasons for not wanting to show his/her machines or having them associated with even the username.
Some people don't want to be associated with some machines because they're running BOINC on them without explicit permission of the owner (we don't encourage this, but it happens). There might be some machines of a certain type in the world, but if e.g. your company's machine is rather exotic and your username expresses something that your boss can associate with you, you may get into trouble.
Some people are simply worried about companies and organisations that dig the net for any information they can get and sell it to everyone who pays for it. It might be a rather useless piece of information by itself, but may be a valuable piece in a larger picture of you.
Finally it is the right for everyone to give out just the minimal amount of information about himself that is absolutely necessary for the project and without being asked for a reason, and it's the projects responsibility to arrange for this.
Of course it is their right and I support that. I apologize if it came across differently. What I wanted to express was simply that I don't understand it, though I'm usually quite particular about privacy myself. But then, I don't have to ;-)
