What do I need to do to fix this?

Well, a good start would be to give a lot more background information as we're not very good at mindreading.

Here is a minimalist list that should be included in all "help" messages.
1. Version of BOINC and when installed or upgraded and how you run it (eg service).
2. Hardware and OS (CPU ID would be good - essential if you have multiple boxes).
3. Do other projects share the resources - if so, E@H resource share.
4. Type of internet connection and any peculiarities of same.
5. Your current "connect to network" preference setting.
6. Any major changes to "default" preference settings in general.
7. Other software and/or users that share the box.
8. What you were doing at the time the error/problem/message occurred.

I'm sure others would be able to suggest further items so the above is just a quick "off-the-top-of-the-head" basic set of useful info to have.

As a plea to users in general, if you expect people to give you useful responses, please try to give as much background information as possible. In other words please do a bit of research before posting rather than risk getting a lot of well meaning but actually unhelpful answers because the person trying to help didn't really fully appreciate what your problem actually was.

Cheers,
Gary.

I am getting the same error

I am getting the same error message. I'm running BOINC 4.19 on a PC with WIndows XP Home Edition Version 5.1 with Service Pack 2. I am also running seti and climatepredict on BOINC, with Einstein assigned to 50% of CPU time. I started running Einstein shortly after it was made available for the general public to sign up for, and it has been running with no problems for months. However, for some unknown reason, Einstein has been unable to download any work units for at least a week. The error message is that "Your Network Connection interval is longer than WU deadline." I have not gotten any similar message from seti@home, and I have not installed any new software. My network connection is a high-speed cable, always on. Also running Norton Internet Security.

Hi David,

i just took a look at your computer summary. There it says your average turnaround time was 7.33 days. Maybe that is the problem because the Deadline is set to 7 days. Unfortunateley i don't know how you could change this value or how it is calculated. Maybe someone else does.

Regards

What do I need to do to fix

What do I need to do to fix this?

According to the scheduler code, this means that you have set your preference setting CONNECT TO NETWORK EVERY N DAYS to a value greater than 7 days. Since the Einstein@Home deadline is 7 days, this is apparently keeping you from getting work.

I'm not sure that this bit of scheduler code is right, since BOINC will make additional network connections as needed to upload the results before the deadline.

So... what is your preference setting value for CONNECT TO NETWORK EVERY N DAYS?

Users reporting this problem

Users reporting this problem have commented on the fact that it has now started happening when there are no local changes. One user is still running 4.19 so the message is not coming from the client side.

When Bruce talks about the scheduler code he is talking about code running on the server that is making new decisions now about whether or not the client (based on its settings and performance) is capable of completing new work within the deadline. This code has been changed recently to try to protect against users downloading and then wasting work. If Bruce is not sure whether it is "right" or not then we're all in real trouble :).

The safest action is to modify your user preferences on the website to change your "connect to network" interval to a more sane value (0.5 to 1.0 days is good) and then the problem should disappear.

Cheers,
Gary.

I changed my user preferences

I changed my user preferences to "connect to network" from 10 days to 6 days, and it solved the problem.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you're still likely to have problems since E@H has a 7 day deadline. I've just had a look at your computer and because of the previously wasted work, the server has limited you to 3 per day. You got 3 new on 7th, 3 new on 8th and I'll bet you get three more on 9th, etc. You are already in trouble even if you don't realise it. You will be wasting more work units.

Your box does a work unit in about 54,000 seconds. There are 600K seconds in 7 days and since you give E@H 50%, you will have 300K crunching seconds for E@H if you run 24/7. You might be lucky to get 5 done but you wont get 6. And if more are downloaded the next day, they will be wasted too. As a matter of urgency, you need to lower your connect interval (and immediately update the project to get it registered) to less than .5 (I'd go for .1) until the backlog clears but it's your choice. Once the backlog clears in several days time you could start increasing slowly to about .5 or perhaps a bit more until the server gives you no more than 4 work units. With that many on hand, you should be able to keep within the deadline.

Cheers,
Gary.

After a couple of days of

After a couple of days of discussion on the BOINC developers mailing list, David Anderson has removed this constraint from the stock BOINC scheduler. So even if you have connect to network every N days set to 10 days, you will still get work from Einstein@Home (with a 7 day deadline). Note however that your machine will initiate connections more often than every ten days, in order to upload completed results on schedule.
