Description

Numerical relativity is primarily concerned with the computer simulation of extremely massive bodies, such as neutron stars and black holes. An accurate model of such systems requires a solution of the full set of Einstein's equations for general relativity - equations relating the curvature of spacetime to the energy distribution.

Our work is a multi-disciplinary effort, spanning the fields of relativistic astrophysics, differential geometry, mathematics of nonlinear partial differential equations and high performance computing. As a result, the numerical relativity effort at the Albert Einstein Institute (AEI) is carried out by members of both the 'Astrophysical Relativity' and 'Geometric Analysis and Gravitation' divisions. Our research interests cover all aspects of numerical relativity, with an emphasis on the numerical modelling of sources of gravitational radiation.
