Interesting article Tullio. If my memory serves me correct string theory can't be proved through experimentation. So that what it will be a theory among other theories. It is interesting to note that E8 theory predicts the existence of some new elementary particles. Maybe the expense of LHC is worthwile to help prove, disprove or rework some of these theories. Like you said previously when they finally get the LHC fired up they will probably find something completely different :-)

Does String Theory have a ?good? explaination for the virtual particles in the quantum vacuum? Something about particles appearing from nowhere gives me the hebbie-gebbies. I was wondering if string theory says they just appear out of hidden dimensions. Or is there an energy basement below our energy floor to which we could suddenly fall into and these particles rise out of it like demons from the nether world.
A tidbit for other non-physists: how should the "Lie" in Lie group be pronounced? It's named after Marius Sophus Lie, who was Norwegian, so the pronunciation is actually Lee-Group, and it's got nothing to do with lying. I always mentally pronounced it like lying (telling a falsehood).
